About Hardik Patel

“Hardik Patel is an Indian social activist who participated in the Patidar reservation agitation. Objective of the agitation is inclusion of the Patidar caste in the Other Backward Class (OBC) category in order to qualify for reserved quotas in education and government jobs.”

My Journey

  • Educational Background
Hardik studied at Divyajyot Vidyalaya at Viramgam till 8th standard. After 8th, he moved to KB Shah Vinay Mandir. He has a bachelor’s degree in Commerce. In 1998 Father, Mr. Bharat Patel moved to Viramgam for better education of his children.
  • Reason Behind The Andolan
His Sister passed 12th std., with first division in Mehsana district. They were absolutely certain aboutgetting admission on merit grounds. Unfortunately, even after getting good marks, they struggled to get admission because they were not in reserved category. To their surprise, they are not the only one who were facing such injustice. The problem not only lied in getting admissions, but didn’t get government jobs easily.
  • Beginning Of The Andolan
After looking at the success of the rally on 23rd July, he decided to conduct a rally on 14th August 2015 at Himmatnagar, to submit an application before collector, and on 16th August 2015 at Viramgam. He received huge public support in his other rally in Surat on 17th August 2015. On August 23rd, 2015, he submitted an application letter to the collector’s office in Vadodara.
  • False Accusations
Seeing his emerging leadership quality, the BJP government arrested him on October 17th, 2015 at Surat under the crime of wrong sedition for provoking the people of Gujarat. On 23rd October 2015, there was a second false accusation in Ahmedabad of wrongful act of indulging in rebellion against the government.
  • Rising Popularity
With the rising popularity, Government stopped using the word ‘Hardik’ in government programs’ banners, hoardings and pamphlets, which instilled fear of his name. On July 13th, 2016, the Gujarat High Court released bail on condition of six months to stay outside Gujarat. This instilled happiness amongst his supporters.
  • When In Rajasthan
He had spent 6 months in the heroic city of Udaipur in Rajasthan. Then BJP government in Rajasthan had ordered him to be under surveillance, and that was astonishing to see.Police tents were put in place outside his residence. But his popularity was so overwhelming, that people of every community from different states of India came to visit him.
  • Early childhood
Hardik Patel was born on July 20, 1993, in a Hindu Patidar family of Gujarat. Bharatbhai and Ushaben are the proud parents of Mr. Hardik Patel. He lives in Chandan nagari village located in Viramgam taluka of Ahmedabad. He has been known as fearless, determined, kind hearted and a person with strong will power. He believes in equal rights. He always fights against injustice and nothing can stop him to accomplish his aim of to create a “Swaraj” for Patidar.
  • Initial Steps For Andolan
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shahid Bhagat Singh and Balasaheb Thackeray are his role models. In 2011, Hardik Patel joined the organization called Sardar Patel Group (SPG) running in North Gujarat. However, after seeing his work method, SPG chairman made him the president of Viramgam Taluka. They formed a strong organization in their province and on this basis, they started organizing and awakening people in Saurashtra. They were involved in awakening the people on issues like women safety, gender equality and youth unemployment.
  • First Rally As A Leader
After seeing all these hurdles and injustice to patidars, he decided to meet collector in his community to propose a rally in Mehsana on 6th July 2015. Rally’s aim was to demand inclusion of Patidars in the OBC (Other backward class) category. On 23rd July 2015, he organized his first ever rally to give an application letter to the Collector’s Office in Visnagar.
  • Public Support
On August 25, 2015 he had a public meeting of 25 lakh people at GMDC ground in Ahmedabad. On the same day at 8 pm he was arrested by the police but looking at people’s unbelievable support to Hardik he got free within 10 minutes, when police tried to detain him. After that meeting, 7000 villagers of Gujarat joined him with an extraordinary support. Then Chief Minister Anandiben Patel announced the package of Rs 1000 crore under Youth Self-Employment Scheme. But they didn’t accept this package, because their primary demand was included in the other backward classes (OBC).
  • Undefeated Spirit
After that, he had spent nine months in the horrific Lajpore Central Jail at Surat. During these nine months, government left no stone unturned to pressurize him to give in. But the man of steadfastness did not give-up. During his prison time, he wrote letters to the people of Gujarat and to the people of various faiths. During his imprisonment, the BJP saw many setbacks and defeat in the Panchayat elections.
  • Massive Response
On July 15th, 2016, when he came out of jail,he was greeted by more than five lakh people of Gujarat. And then he met more than 40 lakh people in just 48 hours covering Gujarat’s 2500 km journey and covering 8 districts. He was so popular that in cities likes Rajkot, Morbi and Ahmedabad that even at 2 am lakhs of people had come out on the streets to get his glimpse. He could give only 20 minutes to his family during this time.
  • Homecoming
On January 17 2017, he has completed six months outside Gujarat. On the very same day,5000 cars from Gujarat and thousands of youth were excited to welcome him at the border of Rajasthan – Gujarat.Today, he has made his own large organization in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.
